Buck Fight

Josh with the victims antlers.

Tuesday the 9th of November is becoming very talked about at Burl these days.  Myself and Mike started the day prepping for our last snow mold app on fairways.   Shortly after Mike had been out spraying he called on the radio, " I think there is a deer sleeping on 2 fwy"  about 10 seconds later " He must be dead cause he's not moving." I found it a little weird that a deer was dead on the golf course.
With golfers playing behind Mike he " grabbed a rag and pulled him into the rough."  so he could continue spraying.  When he approached the green he noticed the flag stick was not in the cup.  After looking for the flag stick for several minuets he needed to move on.  Mike called me on the radio and asked to bring a new flag and stick down to 2 green, and bring some repair tools because the green is " all ripped up from a deer fight."
After hearing all this on the radio, our mechanic Josh ( an avid bow hunter ) went to remove the deer and assess the situation.  " oh yea, his neck is broken, and they had a hell of a fight"  The deer hoove tracks go from the green to the 175 marker. I drove down to 2 green to make some simple repairs on the green surface and look for the flag stick. After about 10 minuets of looking in the woods, weeds, pond, and creek I had no luck.
Rumor has it that a large buck wonders the course and has a Burl Oaks flag stick in his antlers........Some say its true and some not. But we may never know.........

Late Fall Tee Projects

Before last weekends big snow storm, the crew was able to complete 5 White, 6 Yellow and 9 blue and white tees.  The boys from Town and Country Landscape out of Rogers had the tees leveled in a couple days.  After number 9 was complete, we put in new irrigation lines and heads. This will be a big improvement from the old block system on 9.  6 yellow tee is pretty small in size, but will allow players with an easier shot from the new tee.  5 white was only leveled, and will be played as the same yardage.

On Monday the 11th we had 900 rolls of sod delivered and our crew of 10 had the sod laid just before the end of the day. And on Tuesday we stripped the remainder of our Bent nursery ( about 4000sq. ft.) and sodded all of the teeing surfaces. This process is a lot more work but the tees will be playable very early in the season.  If we had seeded these areas they would not be playable for weeks.
